How often should you get your eyes checked for glaucoma?

You already know that people who are at increased risk for glaucoma should schedule regular appointments with their eye doctor to make sure their vision remains healthy. But how often is enough? The Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology breaks it down into four age groups of people:

Ages 20 to 29: If you are not of African descent, you should get your eyes checked at least once in your twenties. If you are, it is a good idea to schedule an appointment every three to five years during this time.

Ages 30-39: If you are not of African descent, you should get your eyes checked at least twice during your thirties. If you are, make sure you schedule an appointment every two to four years.

Ages 40-64: During middle age, everyone should get their eyes checked at least once every four years.

Ages 65 and older: Although everyone in this age group should get their eyes checked at least every two years, many need to go more often.

Ask an eye doctor on your True Dental Discounts vision plan how often you as an individual need to schedule an appointment. Depending on your age and risk factors, it could be more or less often than these recommendations. The most important thing is to make sure you stay on top of your own eye health and be aware of any changes. In a lot of cases, vision loss can be prevented through proactive treatment.
