Vision problems can hamper 3-D movie experience

The popularity of recent 3-D movies has attracted large crowds to the theater. But for people with vision problems, the experience may not be as enjoyable as it should be. According to the American Optometric Association’s Pediatrics and Binocular Vision Committee, people who have “even a small vision misalignment” or non-equal vision in both eyes may not be able to properly view 3-D movies. Because such movies force the eyes to focus simultaneously on images of varying depths, people with binocular vision problems can experience headaches, blurred vision, and dizziness.

The American Optometric Association states that more than half of people ages 18 to 36 have symptoms related to a binocular vision problem. To find out if you could be one of them, answer the following questions:

  • • Can I see 3-D movies as vividly as others watching with me?
  • • Does watching 3-D movies give me a headache or strain my eyes?
  • • Does watching 3-D movies make me feel nauseous or dizzy?
  • • Is it difficult for me to adjust my eyes back to normal after watching a 3-D movie?

If you responded yes to any of these questions, you could benefit from making an appointment with an optometrist on your True Dental Discounts, vision plan. He or she will comprehensively evaluate your vision and let you know of any existing issues. He may also recommend optometric vision therapy, which “re-educates the brain to achieve single, clear, comfortable, two-eyed vision that improves eye coordination, focusing and eye movement” (American Optometric Association). Studies have shown that people who participate in such therapy often see their vision improve and are able to more enjoyably watch 3-D movies.
